Rabenschwinges Cavern blog » Relto http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress Voyages of an explorer Thu, 05 Mar 2015 19:23:51 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.0.38 Writing failures, Part II http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=98 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=98#comments Wed, 29 Sep 2010 09:40:36 +0000 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=98 Wasted another kor’nea. Remember the one I was confident to finish last week? Well, I didn´t.

Well… that´s not entirely true. I DID finish the age – but it seems, I overdid it a little with moisture… when I linked into that age – and DON´T you dare to laugh! – I materialized some 10 feet above a sheet of water. It felt like standing still in the air for a heartbeat (of course I didn´t, but it seemed so), then gravity had me, and I fell. It was very unpleasant, I got wet all over (fortunately the Relto book seems to be waterprove). For a moment, I thought I would sink to the bottom, I had my maintainer suit on – but it seems, they were built to handle such situations.

Now I swam there, looking around – no landmass is visible from the link in spot, as far as I can tell. And so, though the age is stable as far as I can tell, I consider this a failure. What would one do with an age, were there only is water?
It seems to be fresh water, if the displayed informations were correct.
I stayed a little, swimming around a bit, but then I thought about what might swim beneath me, down there, in the dark depths of that lake or whatever it is … suddenly I imagined big fish with long teeth, or big, maritime reptiles like in our earths past – needless to say I linked out very quickly.
There I stood on Relto, soaking wet and really disappointed.

At first, I wanted to burn the book. But then… it IS stable, after all. Maybe it is of any use. I will keep it for now, and think it over.

I visited Afelahn to distract me a little. Kennett has brought me another D’ni excavation-machine – don´t know, what it is called – which can be used to level a rocky floor. I worked for some hours in the cave we had discovered before, and managed to get rid of the most annoying bumps.
By the way: the “clams” I had noticed, are not clams, but tiny crustaceans with clam-like shells. They dig through the soil, like worms on earth. They are approx. 1 to 3 mm long (can´t recall, what this is in inches, sorry)
And I saw another, much bigger creature, at least 3 feet long – it seemed like a really big (and ugly) centipede, but with long, spiny legs and a hard shell, like a lobster. It moved rather quickly, when it saw me, and hid beyond a huge boulder. I didn´t want to follow it – might be poisonous, after all.

Why do I always get ugly, dangerous creatures in the ages I visit? Why not a Squee or something like that?

Success! http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=74 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=74#comments Wed, 15 Sep 2010 20:38:07 +0000 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=74 It´s done! My very first age has been written!
On Sunday I wrote the last gahrohevtee into my kor´nea – and seconds later, the linking panel changed on the first page. It was a bright view of a rocky surface with some grass and other small plants, my first age!

I had already decided before to use the name of the destroyed description book I had found, Afelahn.

I still couldn´t believe it… the link to another world, which no D´ni nor human ever has visited. I felt like Columbus or Neill Armstrong – I would be the first to venture into this age!
On the same day, I don my maintainer suit – had to check everything twice, no, trice, because my hands where shaking like if I had fever.
I put my hand on the linking panel, and instantly materialized on this rocky surface I had seen through it.
I looked around. It was a small valley, filled with a little pond. Grass and small bushes everywhere.
The suits microphones received birds singing and wind noise. I looked onto my suits scales and devices, and it seemed that the atmosphere was clean of any poisonous gas and breathable.
I decided to take some samples – the usual ones, atmosphere, water, soil, and some plants – and returned to my Relto.
I brought them to Asheten mansion to have them analyzed.

When I went to bed that night, I couldn´t sleep for hours… in my mind I tried to remember every single detail, every rock and every grass halm.

The next day, Monday, I instantly run down to the laboratories to get the results. As I had expected, there wasn´t any sign of poisonous or hazardous matter, neither in the atmosphere, nor in soil or water.

I asked B.P. and Alex to join me when I visited the age for the second time.
We arrived there at night – I couldn´t figure out the day-night cycle of the age yet, will have to stay there for some time before I can determine the day length.
It was pretty cool – around 15 degrees Celsius – and the wind was blowing intensely. There are surprisingly few stars in the night sky, and no moon can be seen. B.P. said, maybe the planet is in a outer part of its home galaxy.

We stayed there for a while, enjoying the night. Finally, I decided to put off my helmet. I know, it´s not best idea, but the tests hadn´t shown anything harmful.
The air was fresh, cool and clean.
I think, I´m in love with my own age :)

B.P. said, the rock seems hard and durable. It could be possible to carve some rooms into it… maybe some kind of home base for me, finally!
I will talk to Kennett and Tom Woods about that, one of our engineers. They have done some tremendous work on Asheten mansion and the Kurat neighborhood, maybe they can help me out with some equipment and manpower.

… if a woodchuck could chuck wood? http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=66 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=66#comments Sun, 05 Sep 2010 22:56:48 +0000 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=66 Well, I´m not a woodchuck, that´s for sure.
Yesterday we went on with our work in Risoahl, and it was worse than the last time. We only managed to fell five of that giant bamboo stems, and it was really hard. I cut my hands open, despite wearing thick leather gloves.

Fortunately we decided to break off for the day. Shane Kennett, who led our little working crew, said he would try to find some D´ni equipment – maybe they have some faster, less exhaustive means of doing this.

I used the break to become familiar with other members of the “Forberg expedition” (it really needs an official name, one which can be abbreviated, like the DRC or SR, or TTP, or all the other cool names.)

I had a nice conversation with Alex and another woman, Noelle Belfiore, who is the expeditions linguist. They told me more about the Yagi, the first – and yet only – people of “ahrotahntee”, the expedition has encountered until now.
They seem to be a simple, but spiritual fishing community, living in the age of Yagee Mohts. They aren´t aware of the art, of the D´ni or of the terokh jeruth, and it is official policy of the expedition to not telling them if possible. I agree. It would be a cultural shock to them.
Alex and Noelle have visited them several times – they said, they came from far away (which, from a certain point of view, is true). They did research on the culture, religious believes and the language of the Yagi.
Alex again invited me to join them on their next visit, which is planned for the next week. I´m looking forward to that!

And I was able to meet B.P. and ask him about a place to sleep… told him about my problems with Relto. He assigned a room on the second floor to me. It´s small, but sufficient for me. And it is rather quiet, so I can work on my age.

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck… http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=63 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=63#comments Sun, 05 Sep 2010 18:59:53 +0000 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=63 Work on Risoahl is progressing, albeit slowly. The warm and moist climate of this area may be comfortable when sitting around and chatting, but when you do manual work, you get exhausted rather quick.
We (that is, six adult men) tried to fell some of the giant bamboo to cut free a path through one of the thickest parts of the forest – but the plants are extremely tenacious. After five hours of hard work we managed to fell a small area of the size of a basketball court. Quite disappointing.
We saw quite some wildlife while doing that work – some fish, a 2 feet long lizardlike creature, and some birds, who had a nest in one of the bamboo (We didn´t touch that one. We aren´t that heartless!)
I think, I saw some wormlike creature that suspiciously looked like a leech – I hope I´m wrong. Can´t stand that things.

After we were done for that day, I linked back to my Relto, and tried to get some sleep. Again I recognized, how cold it can be… I fear, my cold will worsen if I keep sleeping there. I wonder, if B.P. can give me a free room in Asheten mansion?

On the next day, I went on writing into my second kor´nea (I had wasted my first one, as I´ve mentioned earlier on this blog.).
This time I am even more cautious than before, only writing gahrohevtee which I know, repeating them to emphasize certain important features I would like to have in my first age.

For example, it should be warm and cozy, and there shouldn´t be any walls which could fall on me… (kidding.)

Opportunities http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=51 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=51#comments Mon, 30 Aug 2010 18:49:49 +0000 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=51 Today I was sitting in my Relto, shivering (I got me a cold, it´s really not the best place to work…) and writing into my first kor´nea. My gahrohevtee become better, but my progress is slow.

Anyway, so I was sitting there, writing, when I suddenly got a KI-mail. It was from a guy who called himself Dr. Forberg. He wrote, he was the leader of an independent expedition, and had heard of my projects from a fellow explorer. He asked for a meeting to discuss my possible involvement with said expedition. He mentioned their capacious funds and the possibilities resulting from those.

I was suspicious at first, but my curiosity made me writing back almost instantly. I agreed to meet him, and asked where and when. He answered quickly, and we agreed to meet in Ae´Gura, in front of the guild hall.

When I arrived there, a bunch of people were standing around and talking, as usual – and one guy stood a little backwards, looking around, as if he waited for someone. I approached him, and it was said Dr. Forberg. We talked a little, and then he asked me to come to a more secluded place so we could talk in privacy. He lead me through the Nexus into a hood named Kurat (which had a very interesting design, by the way – never saw anything like that in other neighbourhoods). There we used a linking book, and stood in an age Dr. Forberg called Risoahl. It was warm and damp, and a lot of birds sang. We stood inmidst a forest of giant bamboo – up to six feet in diameter, and dozens of meters high.

We talked for nearly two hours. Dr. Forberg told me a lot about their expedition, that it was privately financed by an explorer who wanted to stay anonymous and that there were more than 40 people involved, most of them scientists of different fields.

The more I heard about this group, the more I got interested – they would provide solutions to a lot of my concerns about not being able to restore or at least secure my ages and areas – they had the means which I hadn´t.
The next thing that came into my mind was – why would they need me?
Dr. Forberg seemed to know what I was thinking and told me, that they had no one able to write, at least until now. They did not find enough information on age writing, and hoped to learn it from someone, who knew it already. I told him, I was only beginning, but he seemed to be satisfied with that. If I would like to come with him, he would introduce me to the rest of the staff. I agreed, just said I had to prepare some things.
We agreed to meet some hours later in said ´hood, and I linked to my Relto.

The doctor said: no stress http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=31 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=31#comments Thu, 26 Aug 2010 10:46:31 +0000 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=31 I´ve been at a doctor today, and guess what he told me: I´ve a slight concussion. Well, that explains the headaches and why I´m feeling dizzy sometimes.
He looked at me very sternly and said: “No stress!”

As if he knew I wouldn´t take his advice. Well, call me unreasonable, but I don´t have time to waste laying around in my bed and recovering.
Just have to make sure I don´t climb or jump when being dizzy.
Don´t tell my mother.

I sat in my Relto in the morning and counted my kortee´nea, my blank books. I have 14 of them, enough for the time being, I suppose.

Then I started to translate the book of commentary on my own (still don´t have a translator yet).

Progress is really slow, my D´ni isn´t very good, and many words I don´t know.

I´ve managed to find out the name of the age the book was written about, though: Tufolehn.
The book is quite interesting: not only did the author – a member of the guild of writers, but not the writer of the age itself – write about the age itself, but also – and this is even more interesting – how it was written. This is more valuable then I´ve first thought!

The name of the writer of the age seems to have been Anesh, and the way the other guy, Tumak, writes about him, makes me think, he was quite respected in the writers guild.

Unpleasant trip … http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=20 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=20#comments Wed, 25 Aug 2010 19:18:53 +0000 http://dniworlds.rabenschwinge.com/blog/wordpress/?p=20 Well, the trip to city proper didn´t go well. On my search for ink I stumbled into a house which was quite unstable… I didn´t see it coming, until a whole wall came down on me.

Fortunately I´m always wearing a hard hat when venturing into ruined districts… otherwise this could have ended badly for me. A big chunk of wall hit me on the head – it chopped a big scratch into my helmet. Another one touched on my arm, but only lightly.

I´m not hurt badly, except for a biiig headache… maybe I should see a doctor, just to be sure.

Besides from the headache, I brought nothing of value with me… the place is very much devastated. Not much left there.

After that I went to my Relto and once again examined the burnt linking book. From the looks of it, I more and more come to think it IS a descriptive book – so this age, Afelahn, is essentially defunct now. (or at least the link to it.)

I think, I´ll stay with the name for my own, very first written age – if all goes well, I´d like to set up a “base camp” or an office or something like that in the age … Relto is a nice place, but space is limited, and it can be quite cold sometimes, even with the fireplace activated.

But… without ink, I´m not even ready to start writing, which is really annoying right now.

If someone knows a place, where one can find ink, please let me know!
